Good Progress on New Novel “Director’s Cut”

I’m making good progress on my new paranormal suspense novel Director’s Cut, nanowrimo-2016-participantworking towards 50,000 words for Nanowrimo.… and trying to follow my own advice in my article The writing process for creating a novel in less than a month.

No writing for the rest of today as I’ll be in London, but since that’s where my novel is set I’ll be able to put the trip to good use for my ongoing research!

Meanwhile I hope to see some of you at my two books-signings this coming weekend; 20160910_094309-1I’ll be at  Kingsley School Hall, Beauchamp Ave, Leamington Spa CV32 5RD on Saturday 27th and at Princethorpe College, Rugby CV23 9PX on Sunday 28th selling signed copies of my two thriller suspense novels Mystical Circles and A Passionate Spirit.

There’ll be plenty of lovely Christmas gifts and refreshments on both days, and remember: books make an ideal Christmas gift!

“Dream” Book Buyers at Festival of Crafts, Coombe Abbey

Thank you to the “dream buyers” who bought my books on Saturday at the Coombe Abbey Festival of Crafts. 20160910_094309-1 They needed no promotional chat of any kind from me, (which I’ve discovered is counter-productive), studied my banner, reviews and blurbs closely, and recognised that the stories were just their type of thing.20160910_094239-1

Abigail, Jamie and I enjoyed our time at the local author stall in the Craft Marquee at the festival despite the rain and damp – though I feared my books might be starting to curl!

Thank you too to another stallholder, Holly Webster, who came over to me to look at my books and to chat about her own urban dark fantasy novels. I’ve looked her up on Amazon and  though the horror element in her novel Blood Borne is much  darker than my usual taste, curiosity may lead me to download on my Kindle!

Thank you also to the lady who came over and bought a copy of “Mystical Circles” and said, “I shall read this today and review it tomorrow.”

Now all I need is for buyers like this to be increased a hundredfold!20160910_09395420160910_094001-120160910_094112-1-120160910_094239-1

Thank you to Mog and Pauline of Warwick Books for hosting my book-signing event on Saturday 7th May

Many thanks to Mog and Pauline at Warwick Books for hosting my book-signing in the shop on Saturday 7th May… and thank you to those lovely customers who bought copies of my two novels Mystical Circles and A Passionate Spirit.SC Skillman in Warwick Books for book-signing 7 May 2016Although the beautiful weather kept custom low  – I suspect all the regular clientele may have been out and about, or sunbathing, rather than in the shop buying books! – nevertheless I was happy to sign books for some enthusiastic visitors.

One of my book-buyers said:

“I just cannot resist buying books when I come into a bookshop. I know I shouldn’t. My bookshelves are full. But it’s an addiction isn’t it?” When he learned I was a local author selling signed copies of my books, psychological suspense set in the Cotswolds, he immediately said, “Are you? Oh, well I’ll have to buy one of them then! Which one shall I buy?” I told him my 18 year old son Jamie, who was with me, had read both books. He said, “Your son must be saintly! Tell me then…” addressing himself to Jamie… “which book do you recommend me to buy?” So Jamie recommended him to buy “A Passionate Spirit.” He said, “All right then. I’ll buy that one.” So I signed it and sold it to him.

This is the sort of customer I love!  I wish all subsequent customers had followed in his footsteps! But an author  is only too well aware how varied people are especially in their reactions to published books, as shown by online book reviews: and I am grateful for those who encouraged me with their response.

May I also congratulate Pauline for being nominated in the British Book Industry Awards shortlist for bookshop manager of the year.

My next local book-signing event will be in Leamington Spa in  June, so watch out for details of that!

I’ll be at Kenilworth Books Signing Copies of A Passionate Spirit on Saturday 13th February 2016

Kenilworth Books is one of our lovely local independent bookshops and I’m happy to announce I’ll be there signing copies of my new novel on Saturday 13th February.

If you’re local to the Leamington Spa, Warwick, Coventry and Kenilworth area and you’re around on Saturday 13th, I’d love to see you in the shop. I’ll be there from 11am to 2pm

I launched my previous novel Mystical Circles in Kenilworth Books in 2010. The then owners Frances and Keith were very supportive to me, and I’m delighted that Judy, the new owner, is equally friendly and encouraging.

If you love independent bookshops, and you’d like to visit Talisman Square, Kenilworth on Saturday 13th, and you like the sound of A Passionate Spirit, do drop in and see me between 11am and 2pm.  I’d love to meet you and be able to chat to you there and hopefully sign a copy of A Passionate Spirit for you.
